What Traveling in June is Like

Before diving into the destinations, here is what to generally expect when traveling in June so you can plan accordingly.

☀️ Weather in June

June marks the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere, which means long days, warm temperatures, and generally excellent conditions across much of Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. In Scandinavia and other northern destinations, the summer solstice brings nearly 24 hours of daylight, which is a truly extraordinary thing to experience.

That said, June is not great everywhere. Monsoon season is in full swing across much of Southeast Asia, making destinations like Bali, Thailand, and Vietnam significantly wetter and less enjoyable than other times of year. Parts of the Caribbean and Central America also enter their rainy season in June, so it is worth doing your research before booking.

On the southern hemisphere, it is the beginning of winter, which means the bottom part of South America, Southern Africa, and Australia + New Zealand are much colder this time of year.

🎟 Booking Travel in June

June sits in an interesting position when it comes to pricing and availability. It is technically the start of peak season in many destinations, but it has not yet hit the full madness of July and August. That means you can often still find reasonable prices if you book early, but leave it too late and you will be paying premium rates for limited availability.

For festival destinations specifically, early booking is absolutely essential. Events like Midsummer in Sweden, the Wine Battle in Haro, São João in Porto, and Secret Solstice in Iceland draw massive crowds, and accommodation in smaller towns can sell out months in advance.

Our general advice is to lock in your flights and hotels as soon as you know your dates, especially if you are traveling around the summer solstice weekend.

🌍 Best Areas of the World to Visit in June

June is an exceptional month for Europe across the board. The days are long, the weather is warm across most of the continent, and the festival calendar is absolutely packed. Scandinavia in particular is at its best, with the midnight sun and summer solstice celebrations making it one of the most special regions to visit this time of year. The Mediterranean is great but starting to get busy and expensive, so opting for lesser known destinations over the obvious ones will serve you well.

The North Atlantic islands are outstanding in June, with long days, mild temperatures, and stunning natural scenery at its most vivid. North America has incredible options on both ends of the spectrum, from endless daylight in the far north to vibrant Pride celebrations on both coasts.

South America has its own compelling reasons to visit in June, particularly for those looking for a big cultural celebration. And the Caucasus region is at a lovely sweet spot in June, warm and lush before the summer heat kicks in.

Dubrovnik comes alive this time of year with the launch of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, bringing music, theater, and performances to the backdrop of the city’s stunning old town walls.

The nightlife is buzzing, the Adriatic is warm, and the island hopping scene is in full swing. If you are looking for sun, fun, and plenty of energy, Croatia in June delivers all of it.

🇸🇪 Sweden

If there is one country that truly comes alive in June, it is Sweden. Midsummer, celebrated on the weekend on or after June 21st, is the country’s biggest annual tradition. Everyone dresses in white, weaves flower crowns from wildflowers, and dances around the maypole in a celebration that is childlike and lighthearted. But once the sun starts to dip, the festivals kick off and things get pretty wild.

We celebrated in Dalarna in 2023 and it was one of the most memorable weekends of our travels. For the most traditional experience head to the towns around Lake Siljan, and for something more lively and coastal, Smögen on the west coast is a fantastic option.

🇫🇷 France

France is one of the most iconic countries to travel in June, and Provence is the reason why.

Welcome to lavender season! The lavender fields begin blooming across the region, turning the countryside into endless rows of fragrant purple that look almost too beautiful to be real. If chasing lavender fields is on your bucket list, Provence in late June is the time to do it.

The Valensole Plateau is the most famous spot, but there are gorgeous fields scattered throughout the entire region. Pair it with the charming French villages, incredible food, and world class rosé wine of the area and you have one of the most perfect June trips imaginable.

🇦🇿 Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is one of the most underrated countries to travel in June, and not enough people are talking about it.

We actually visited in July and found it just a touch too hot, which made us realize that June would have been the perfect sweet spot. The temperatures are comfortable, the landscapes are lush and green, and the lavender fields are in bloom, making for some of the most stunning scenery in the entire Caucasus region.

The country has a fascinating mix of ancient history, dramatic mountain landscapes, and a surprisingly cosmopolitan capital in Baku. June gives you the best of all of it, with pleasant enough temperatures to enjoy both the mountains and the city without the July heat making everything uncomfortable.

🇪🇸 Spain

Spain is one of the best countries to travel in June for festival lovers, and the small town of Haro in the La Rioja region is the most compelling reason to visit.

Every year from June 28th to 30th, Haro hosts the Batalla de Vino, one of the most wild and wonderful festivals in the world.

The town becomes a full on battlefield of wine starting at 7am, with bull fights, parties, and thousands of people absolutely drenched in red wine from head to toe. Do not wear anything you care about for this one!

🇵🇹 Portugal

Portugal earns a triple mention for June, and for very good reason. The entire country seems to celebrate this month, and it is honestly one of the best countries to travel in June in all of Europe.

In Lisbon, the Festas de Lisboa takes over the city throughout the entire month of June, with the biggest celebrations happening around June 13th for Santo António. The streets of Alfama fill with sardines grilling on open fires, paper decorations, and parties that go all night long. It is one of the most atmospheric and authentic celebrations you can experience in Portugal.

In Porto, the Festa de São João on June 23rd is one of the biggest and most beloved street celebrations in all of Europe. The entire city pours out onto the streets for bonfires, fireworks, music, and parties that go all night long. It is super exciting, and there are also plenty of great things to do in Porto before or after the festival.

Out in the Atlantic, visiting the Azores archipelago is equally spectacular in June. We visited in early June and loved it, but would recommend aiming for late June specifically when the hydrangeas are in full bloom, blanketing the roadsides and hillsides of the islands in vivid shades of blue and pink.

The whale watching in June is also amazing, and the island of Terceira hosts wonderful local events throughout the month. Just book early as this is the start of busy season and things fill up fast.

🌅 England

England makes our list of best countries to travel in June twice, and for two very different reasons.

In Wiltshire, Stonehenge draws more than 10,000 people every year for the summer solstice sunrise, when the first rays of sun shine directly through the ancient stones and illuminate the heart of the monument in a truly breathtaking way. It is free to attend, open to all, and one of the most impressive experiences you can have anywhere in the world.

Meanwhile, Glastonbury in Somerset hosts one of the most iconic music festivals on the planet every June. If you can get your hands on tickets, there is truly nothing else like it. The lineup, the atmosphere, and the sheer scale of it all make Glastonbury one of the most bucket list worthy events in the world.

🌊 Montenegro

Montenegro is one of the most underrated countries to travel in June in all of Europe, and it consistently surprises anyone who makes it there. The weather is absolutely beautiful, warm and sunny without the brutal heat that hits in July and August, and the country has not yet been swamped by the summer crowds that descend on the region later in the season.

While everyone else is heading to Croatia, Montenegro offers an equally stunning coastline, dramatic mountains, and charming old towns at a fraction of the price and with far fewer people.

The Bay of Kotor is breathtaking in June, the beaches are enjoyable without being packed, and you can actually explore at a relaxed pace.

🇨🇭 Switzerland

Switzerland is one of the best countries to travel in June for outdoor lovers, and Interlaken is the perfect base for experiencing it. The hiking trails are fully open, the Alpine scenery is lush and green, and the weather is warm and ideal for adventure. Best of all, the peak summer crowds have not quite arrived yet, which makes June a genuine sweet spot for visiting.

We loved exploring all of the beautiful places Switzerland in summer and while it’s always a pricey destination to visit, it’s certainly not as expensive in June as it during peak summer or winter.

Whether you are there for the hiking, the paragliding, or simply to soak in those mountain views, June delivers everything Switzerland is famous for without the chaos of high season.

🇳🇴 Norway

Norway is one of the most extraordinary countries to travel in June, and Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands above the Arctic Circle are the places to experience it at its most dramatic.

The city of Tromsø sits far enough north to experience nearly 24 hours of daylight during the midnight sun season, and the quality of light is unlike anything you will ever see anywhere else.

You’ll have at he perfect blend of lush greenery, slightly snowcapped mountains, and glistening waters to enjoy. The best part though? The surrounding fjords, mountains, and Arctic landscapes take on an otherworldly glow that makes every hour of the night feel like golden hour. If you have ever wanted to experience the midnight sun in its most breathtaking form, Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands in June are the places to do it.

Iceland is one of the most unique countries to travel in June, and the midnight sun is the main reason why. The endless daylight means you can hike, chase waterfalls, and explore the dramatic volcanic landscapes at literally any hour of the day or night, with stunning golden light painting the sky for hours on end.

Reykjavik in particular is even more attractive in June. The city hosts Secret Solstice, a fantastic music and culture festival that takes place at the end of June and uses the midnight sun as its spectacular backdrop. It is one of the most unique festival experiences in the world and pairs perfectly with everything else Iceland has to offer in summer.

🌎 Best Countries to Travel in June in the Americas

From midnight sun in Alaska to Pride celebrations in Brazil, the Americas offer some of the most diverse and exciting options for the best countries to travel in June. Here are our top picks.

🇺🇸 USA

The United States is one of the best countries to travel in June, with incredibly diverse experiences depending on where you go.

Alaska in June is nothing short of spectacular. The midnight sun brings nearly 24 hours of daylight, wildlife is incredibly active, glaciers are accessible, and the landscapes are at their most vivid and alive. Fairbanks hosts its famous Midnight Sun Festival on the Sunday closest to the summer solstice, with music, sports, and celebrations that take full advantage of the endless daylight.

June is also Pride Month, and the US is home to two of the most iconic celebrations in the world. San Francisco, which has long been at the heart of LGBTQ+ history and culture, hosts one of the most famous Pride parades anywhere on earth. And New York City’s Pride is equally epic, drawing millions of people to the streets of Manhattan for a celebration that is as much a cultural moment as it is a party. If Pride is on your bucket list, the US in June is the place to be.

🍁 Canada

Canada is one of the most breathtaking countries to travel in June, and Banff National Park in Alberta is the absolute gem of it all. The hiking trails are opening up, the wildflowers are beginning to bloom, and the impossibly turquoise lakes are at their most stunning.

Best of all, the peak summer crowds of July and August have not yet arrived, which means you can experience one of the world’s most spectacular natural destinations at a slightly more relaxed pace. June is genuinely a sweet spot for Banff, and one we highly recommend taking advantage of.

As a bonus, Canada is also one of the hosts of the World Cup, so you can combine a visit to various destinations across the country to enjoy gorgeous nature and football (soccer) fun all in one!

Mexico is one of the most versatile countries to travel in June, offering a few very different but equally special experiences. In San Miguel de Allende, one of Mexico’s most beautiful colonial cities, the Festival of San Antonio fills the streets with color, music, and celebration throughout the month. The weather is warm and gorgeous, and the city is at its most lively and festive.

Head south to one of the most beautiful places on the Yucatan Peninsula, Chichen Itza hosts one of the most breathtaking summer solstice experiences in the world. As the sun hits at exactly the right point on June 21st, precisely half of the iconic El Castillo pyramid is bathed in sunlight while the other half falls into complete shadow, creating a stunning visual phenomenon on one of the seven wonders of the world and a truly once in a lifetime experience.

Finally, if you love unique animal encounters, then June is an excellent month for swimming with whale sharks! Just keep in mind that this is the beginning of the rainy season, so expect a lot of heat and humidity, particularly in the south of the country.

Travel to São Paulo -this city hosts one of the biggest Pride parades in the entire world. It draws millions of people to the streets of Brazil’s largest city for parades, parties, and celebrations that go on for days.

It takes place on the Sunday after Corpus Christi each year, and is without question one of the most exciting and colorful events on the global calendar. If Pride Month is on your travel bucket list, São Paulo in June should be at the very top.

Morocco in June is hot, there is no getting around that. But if you time your visit around the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music, it is absolutely worth it. It is a side of Morocco that most tourists never get to see, and reason enough to brave the heat.

🛳 Bermuda

Bermuda is one of the most underrated destinations to travel in June in the entire Caribbean and Atlantic region, and we say that from personal experience. We visited many times while working on cruise ships, and June was always our favorite time to be there. The weather is warm and gorgeous, the famous pink sand beaches are at their absolute best, and the island comes alive with two of its most beloved events.

Harbour Nights is a weekly street festival in the capital Hamilton that fills the streets with local vendors, live music, and incredible food every Wednesday evening throughout the summer. And Bermuda’s carnival brings an explosion of color, costumes, and pure celebration to the island that is completely infectious. June in Bermuda is genuinely one of our favorite travel memories from our cruise ship days, and it is a destination we always love going back to.

🌏 Best Countries to Travel in June in Asia

Asia can be tricky in June due to monsoon season across much of Southeast Asia, but one destination stands out as a genuinely fantastic option among the best countries to travel in June in the region. It’s not because of the weather, but rather due to the vibrant festivals around the country.

🕌 India

India is one of the most culturally rich countries to travel in June, and the festival calendar throughout the month is a big reason why. Ganga Dussehra is a ten day festival where people offer floating lamps on the sacred Ganga River in a deeply moving and beautiful ceremony.

The Hemis Festival in Ladakh brings two days of traditional handicrafts, colorful local attire, and cultural performances that are unlike anything else you will find in the region.

Also in Goa, there’s the São João Festival on June 24th, which shares its Portuguese roots with the Porto celebration we mentioned earlier. It fills the streets with colorful decorations, masks, and parties along the water.

Enjoying the Best Countries to Visit in June: Final Tips & What’s Next

Now you have our complete guide to the best countries to travel in June! As you can see, the month has an incredible amount to offer no matter what kind of traveler you are. Whether you are chasing lavender fields, midnight sun, world class festivals, or simply great weather without the peak season chaos, June delivers.

Here are a few final tips to help you make the most of it:

  • Book early for festival destinations. Events like Midsummer in Sweden, the Wine Battle in Haro, São João in Porto, Glastonbury in England, and Secret Solstice in Iceland all draw massive crowds. Accommodation in smaller towns can sell out months in advance, so do not leave it to the last minute.
  • June is the start of peak season in many destinations. The Azores, Montenegro, Interlaken, and Banff are all fantastic in June partly because they are not yet at their busiest, but that window closes quickly. The earlier you book, the better your options and prices will be.
  • Know what to avoid. June is not great everywhere. Monsoon season is in full swing across much of Southeast Asia, parts of the Caribbean are entering rainy season, and the Middle East is getting uncomfortably hot. Do your research before booking.
  • Check exact festival dates before locking in your flights. Most of the events we have mentioned fall on specific dates each year, and some shift slightly depending on the calendar. Make sure your travel dates actually line up with the celebration you are going for.
  • June is one of the best months to find value in Europe. Many destinations are at their best but have not yet hit peak July and August pricing. If you are flexible, this is one of the best months of the year to travel well without overspending.
  • Pack for variable weather. Even in June, northern Europe and higher altitude destinations can be unpredictable. A light layer and a compact rain jacket are always worth throwing in your bag.
